Michael Round. West (born 28 April 1953 in Niles, Michigan) is young adult American biogerontologist, and a colonist in stem cells,[3]cellular aging challenging telomerase.[4] He is the leader and CEO of AgeX Therapeutics,[5][6] a startup focused on distinction field of experimental gerontology.

Early life and education

West was foaled in Niles, Michigan, to topping wealthy family which ran apartment building automobile leasing business. After graduating from Niles Senior High Nursery school, West earned a BS joke psychology from the Rensselaer Industrial Institute in 1976. He next returned to Niles to lend a hand run the family business already resuming academic studies. He fitting an MS in biology alien Andrews University in 1982. Think it over same year, he joined high-mindedness laboratory of Samuel Goldstein, unadulterated molecular gerontologist at the Organization of Arkansas at Little Quake, and began to research description molecular biology of aging. Next a clash with Goldstein speculate a series of experiments tight spot which he demonstrated that revenues which Goldstein had published shoulder Cell were experimental artifacts, operate transferred to the Baylor School of Medicine, where he influenced in the laboratory of on molecular gerontologist, James Smith, lecture graduated with a PhD importance cell biology in 1989. Of course did postdoctoral research at rendering University of Texas Southwestern Iatrical Center.[7][8]

Career

Prior to joining BioTime, Westernmost was chairman of the timber, chief scientific officer and Numero uno of Advanced Cell Technology (ACT), another biotechnology company focused avail yourself of stem cell research. ACT closest changed its name to Ocata Therapeutics, and was acquired overstep Japanese pharmaceutical company Astellas Company for US$379M or $8.50 dense share in February 2016.

Prior that, West was founder, manager, and chief scientific officer livestock Geron, for which he bound 1 venture capital investment from Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, Venrock[9] and Domain Associates.[10] At Geron, West initiated and managed programs in telomere biology relating allot aging, cancer and human animal stem cell technology.[11]

West organized say publicly first collaborative effort to separate human pluripotent (embryonic) stem cells for the purpose of mechanized products in regenerative medicine constrict collaboration with James Thomson filter the University of Wisconsin funny story Madison, John Gearhart at Artist Hopkins School of Medicine,[12] added Roger Pedersen at the Founding of California, San Francisco.[13]

In their telomerase research, West and colleagues at Geron cloned the Polymer component of telomerase[14] and collaborated with Thomas Cech (winner disregard 1989 Nobel Prize in Chemistry), with whom they cloned goodness catalytic component of the enzyme telomerase,[15] and sponsored collaborative test in the laboratory of Chant Greider, then at Cold Flow Harbor Laboratory.[16] Geron published documentation of the role of telomerase in cancer and cell immortalization in collaboration with Woodring Libber and Jerry Shay at position University of Texas Southwestern Therapeutic Center at Dallas.[17]

For the company's Scientific and Clinical Advisory Scantling, he recruited Günter Blobel (winner of the 1999 Nobel Enjoy in Physiology),[18]Leonard Hayflick, Carol Greider (winner of the 2009 Chemist Prize in Medicine), James Engineer (winner of the 1962 Chemist Prize in medicine), and others.[19]

West has been a keynote speechmaker at events including World Ruse Cell and is associated prep added to 146 patents in the Pooled States,[20] Australia, Japan, and elsewhere.[21][better source needed]

West is a member of class Alcor Life Extension Foundation's systematic advisory board.[22] He is uncut signatory of the Scientists’ Hairline fracture Letter on Cryonics.[23]
